1. Fill Out Your Application

Start with the “Volunteer Now” button and enter your zip code to find local troops in your area. Skim through the open volunteer roles until you see the Troop Leader position. Of course, you’re also free to select other open positions too!
To complete your application, you’ll need to sign up for a Girl Scouts Membership. You can choose from an annual or lifetime membership, depending on your budget and long-term goals.
2. Authorize Your Background Check
Once you’ve submitted your application, you’ll receive a confirmation email within three days. The email will include a link to authorize a background check. The cost is $6 and you’ll need to have one done every three years.
As you would expect, the organization is committed to the safety of its girls. If you have any history of felonies, violent crimes, or even a DUI conviction, you won’t qualify to become a volunteer.
3. Complete Required Troop Leader Training
Once your background check comes back clear, you’ll likely have an interview with the other volunteers in your area. This ensures that you’re a good match for the troop, the girls, and the other scout leaders.
Next, you’ll log in to your account and complete the required Girl Scouting 101 course. Your local center may also require additional training and certifications, such as Managing Finances or a CPR/First Aid certification. They’ll let you know during your interview which courses to complete.
4. Get Started as a Girl Scout Leader
You’re almost there — soon you’ll be able to proudly wear patches for boy & girl scouts as a troop leader! Once all your training is complete, you’ll be invited to attend a Troop Leader Welcome Session (also called New Leader Training).
Here you’ll get familiar with all the resources and tools you need to become a successful leader. You’ll learn about the Volunteer Toolkit, a digital planning program that lets you schedule and plan activities.
You’ll also connect with local chapter accounts on social media, such as Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest.
